CONDUCT
Student Conduct
The Tap Studio students are positive, hard-working and kind. Students are expected to treat the owner, instructors, fellow dancers within the studio, dancers within the dance community, The Tap Studio facility and Turnagain Arts Building facility with respect at all times.
Parent Conduct
The Tap Studio parents are expected to set an example to the Tap Studio students, and must abide by the student conduct guidelines. Please refrain from gossip and complaints with other parents while waiting in the hallway. Address all concerns directly to Valerie Thurston.
DRESS CODE
Tap Shoes
Students may wear any style of tap shoe which feels comfortable. The Tap Studio does not recommend that beginners wear tap shoes with a heel that is higher than one inch.
Clothing
Students may wear any clothing of their choice, with the exception of dresses and clothing which exposes the midsection. It is highly recommended that the student wears shorts or capris so his/her ankle and foot are fully exposed.
PRIVATE LESSON POLICIES
Payments
Private lessons must be paid on a monthly basis. Discounts apply for semester or full year payments.
Missed Lessons
You have a pre-paid, reserved lesson time. If you cannot attend your scheduled lesson and/or if you have a sudden emergency, as a courtesy, please contact the studio as soon as possible. The Tap Studio does not provide make-up lessons and you are forfeiting instruction for all missed lessons.
CLASS POLICIES
Placement
Placement is at the sole discretion of the studio owner. Students with previous tap experience will need to contact the owner to schedule a placement interview appointment.
Promotion
Promotion to another level is at the sole discretion of the owner.
Class Size
Maximum class size is 10 students, and minimum class size is 3 students. Classes fill up on a first-come, first-serve basis. Spots will not be held for students if registration and payment of tuition is not complete.
Wait List
Students wishing to enroll in classes which are full will be placed on a wait list, at the discretion of the owner. We will also place on the wait list requests for classes to be offered at different days or times than the published schedule. Placement on the wait list does not guarantee that a class will become available to the student.
Low Enrollment
The Tap Studio reserves the right to cancel or combine classes due to low enrollment. A tuition refund will be issued for classes cancelled due to low enrollment.
Low Attendance
In the event that one student shows up for a group class, that class will be considered a private lesson and will run for half of the regularly scheduled time. In the event that two students show up for a single class, that class will be considered a semi-private lesson and will run for 3/4 of the regularly scheduled time.
Tardiness
If a student arrives 15 minutes late, he/she will not be allowed to dance and may observe from the front of the class.
Make-Up Classes
A student may make up the classes he/she misses in alternate classes recommended by the owner. Students can only take make-up classes within the 8-week session that he/she missed.
Closures
The Tap Studio will automatically close if the Anchorage School District cancels school and/or after-school activities due to weather or natural disasters. Additionally, if the owner is unable to teach a class due to unforeseen circumstances, she will notify students as soon as possible. In either case of closure, the student may attend a make-up class on another day within the session of the cancelled class.
TAP HISTORY
In-Class Learning Sessions
Class time will be used to give students a well-rounded tap education. This includes learning about tap legends and contemporary tap leaders through lecture, storytelling and showing of video footage.
COMMUNICATION WITH THE OWNER
In-Between Classes
Please be courteous of the students before/after your student’s class or private lesson. Sometimes, it’s not possible for Valerie to converse in length in between classes because another scheduled class or lesson must begin on time.
E-Mail or Text is Preferred
It is preferable that parents communicate with the owner via text message (907-903-4608) or e-mail (vthurston@thetapstudioak.com).
